About

I’m Marcie Wolfe, the Executive Director of the Institute for Literacy Studies (ILS), an organized research unit of The City University of New York at Lehman College, Bronx, NY. I serve as principal investigator for the ILS’s numerous funded projects related to instruction and assessment in literacy and mathematics education, and, in addition, co-direct Lehman College’s Writing Across the Curriculum Initiative.

The Institute for Literacy Studies at Lehman College advances urban education reform by strengthening literacy and mathematics teaching and by supporting teachers as key educational decision-makers. We conduct professional development, program evaluation, direct service, and research projects in educational settings ranging from schools to colleges and community organizations. Our major programs include the Lehman College Adult Learning Center, the New York City Mathematics Project, and the New York City Writing Project. Our programs are funded by various public and private entities; we are grateful to Lehman College and to CUNY more broadly for their ongoing support of our work.

This blog will collect informal updates about ILS people and projects, news from our diverse education worlds, and some links to readings and media meant to inform or provoke. Through this blog we hope to connect ILS staff across projects, and also connect with a broader community at large. This is not a space for anything urgent; we hope it will be breezy in tone and fun to read.
